We are excited about our plans for 2010 - 2011. We live in an area surrounded by forests and our school is in a woodland setting so this year we plan to honour our surroundings by focusing on forests in various ways through our curriculum during the coming year.

SCHOOL DISTRICT 64 ¥ GULF ISLANDS |
GOAL 1
ÒWhat?Ó
Goal statements help to focus priorities for improving student learning.
Objectives help to focus goals into more specific areas of attention. |
The students will develop an awareness of our local forest ecosystems.
Students will:
¥ Identify trees, plants, cones and the animals that live in our local forest habitat
¥ learn survival needs of living things in the forest
¥ learn how to protect and respect the living things in the forest
¥ learn about life cycles and hydrological cycles
¥ learn how First Nations used the gifts of the forest
¥ develop a greater understanding of and respect for their place
¥ enhance their observations skills |
Rationale
ÒWhy?Ó
A rationale is a thorough and connected set of reasons, based on evidence, for the selection of goals and objectives. |
By understanding the local forest ecosystem, student will develop a greater appreciation for the living things that surround them. This will lead to stewardship of our forests and other ecosystems. Students will learn the interconnected of living things and their role in the local habitat.
Students will become advocates for the local forests and take a leadership role in the community.
Students will learn to reduce, reuse and recycle. |
Performance Indicators/ Evidence
ÒDataÓ
Performance Indicators are measures used to indicate progress towards attainment of goals and objectives. |
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of forests at a ÒForest CelebrationÓ held for their parents on Earth Day. Students will choose how to display their learning. Some may perform a song or skit. Others may display a report or art piece.
Our grounds and forest will have less debris.
Students and staff will reduce their use of paper.
Students and staff will produce less garbage. |
Strategies
ÒWith what & how?Ó
Clearly articulated strategies connect district efforts and activities with desired student results. Strategies are presented as succinct statements outlining actions and activities, directed toward student learning, that clearly link to achieving district goals and objectives. |
Students will spend time outside on a regular basis to observe and journal about the forests.
Each student will receive a nature journal that will be used every year. Students will be given their nature journal as a gift at the grade five leaving ceremony.
First Nations speakers will be invited to share knowledge about Forests.
Artists in the classroom will be used to help students express their understanding of forests through art.
Forest themed explorations will be held in Jan, Feb, March and April leading up to Earth Day.
Students will take field trips to local forests, sawmills, middens and farms. |
Structures
ÒWith what?Ó

School based pro-d will be used to develop place-based, experiential, forest related lessons.
Reading materials will be purchased to support the forest theme.
