Readers

We dropped everything to read on October 26, National School Library Day.

Welcome to our Library

scrabble

Our scrabble tournament helped our students learn new words, practice spelling and adding with two digit numbers. We also raised money for relief for people in Africa living with the AIDS crisis.

Deb Nostdal Deb Nostdal is our new Librarian. She is also the Fernwood and Middle School Librarian. Gail Neumann is our Library clerk. She also works in the main office as School Secretary

Scrabble
On Monday, all the classes played Scrabble in the library. It was great to play with words, to learn and spell new words, and for some to practice adding two digit numbers while keeping score! ÊPlease keep playing Scrabble with your kids at home. Donations can come in again Monday. All proceeds will go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. This was part of an island-wide (Grandmothers to Grandmothers) and world-wide aids pandemic relief campaign.

In response to the role of African grandmothers, The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign was launched in 2006.  These formerly unsung heroes  took up the task of nursing their sons and daughters as they died, and raising their orphaned grandchildren.

There are 239 Canadian grandmother groups who have raised over 7 million dollars.  The funds provide food, school fees and uniforms (mandatory for attending school), income generating projects, counseling and social support, and even coffins to allow for dignified funerals in areas devastated by the pandemic. A primary goal is to put 90% of the money received directly into the hands of communities and front-line organizations engaged in meeting the real needs of women, orphans and people living with HIV/AIDS.

Scholastic Book Fair Thanks
Thank you to Sharyn Carroll for organizing the book fair this week. Thanks to all the volunteers too including Carrina Maslovat, Wendy Nixon, Tina Tamboline, Jacquie Byron, Ann Cronin, Ardice McCray, Janice Shields, April Roach, Vanessa Hendel-Farias, Adrian Selby and Jane MacKenzie. Please forgive us if we forgot anyone. We appreciate everyone of you as well as all those who shopped or sent money so their children could shop. You all made a difference.

Drop Everything and Read
On Monday, October 26, our students stopped everything from 11 to 11:20 and met in their family groups to read. This is a celebration of National School Library Day. We encourage our students to read every day.

BC Teacher-librarians want to draw attention to the importance of reading in the development of a successful human being. People know that the more you read the better you get at it, and that the ability to read with understanding is vitally important to success in the world. Reading improves vocabulary, increases general knowledge about the world, improves one's writing, and is a great way to relax. Not so obvious is its ability to increase the reader's capacity for empathy, stimulate imagination and create new connections in the brain. No wonder reading is so closely linked with economic and social success in adult life Ð and the Internet has only increased our need to interact with text!
